"Emma" has dethroned the reigning "Mia" as the favourite baby girl name in Germany, it was announced on Tuesday, as a list of top baby names of 2014 was published. Mia had held the top spot for five years, in an increasingly internationalised-sounding list.
German parents kept it short and sweet when picking a name for their new bundles of joy this year. The most popular baby names in 2011 were Mia for girls and Ben for boys.
Maximilian and Sophie were Germany’s most popular baby names in 2010, according to an annual list published by the Association for German Language (GfdS) this week, which also revealed unusual names that were rejected by officials.
