When I began the German driver’s license process, I was unprepared for the many challenges I would encounter. From finding a Fahrschule with English-speaking instructors to taking the practical exam at 8:00 a.m. on a dark, foggy winter morning, the experience was far more demanding than I had anticipated. Having driven for more than 40 years in New York City, I assumed the process would be relatively straightforward. I was mistaken. In the end, I passed the practical examination on my third attempt. One piece of advice for prospective applicants: while the theory exam may be available in your native language, do not assume that your Fahrschule instructors or the TÜV examiners will be. Being prepared to communicate in German can make the process considerably easier.
