Every autumn, the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings are eagerly awaited by students, academics and policymakers alike.
This comprehensive study evaluates over 2,000 universities worldwide, using a set of indicators including teaching, research, international outlook and industry links.
In the latest edition, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) leads the German contingent, claiming the 26th spot globally.
For the Times Higher Education study, universities were each scored out of a hundred in categories including international outlook and the ability to help industry with innovations and inventions
But THE is not the only global ranking that matters. While it balances reputation with quantitative research and teaching metrics, the QS World University Rankings place greater emphasis on reputation surveys and fostering an international community.
In the QS list, five German universities appear in the top hundred.
Germany has numerous high quality universities, many of which have become increasingly popular with international students attracted by their low costs and various course offers in English.
Read on for a list of the "best of the best" according to the rankings, as well as information on how many international students they host and where they rank in terms of graduate employability.
Technical University of Munich (TUM) – THE: 27th | QS: 22nd
The Technical University of Munich is Germany’s highest-ranked university in both THE and QS studies. It received a perfect score for the strength of its ties to industry, and an impressive 83.4 out of 100 points in THE's study for its international outlook.
TUM is renowned for its dynamic and international student life, with around 45 percent of its student body comprised of international students. It also ranked 13th globally in terms of graduate employability, so students who complete a course here can expect to have a good chance of securing a job.
TUM also hosts two major student-run festivals each year – TUNIX and GARNIX – featuring live music, food stalls and cold beer, making it a lively spot for both study and socialising.

Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (LMU) – THE: 34th | QS: 58th
Also located in the Bavarian capital, LMU Munich is renowned for its Arts and Humanities programmes and offers a broad range of disciplines.
The university has risen four places in the THE rankings since last year and stands out for its historic campus and central location in Munich, putting students right in the middle of the city’s rich cultural life.
LMU also received a perfect score for the quality of its links to industry, and was ranked 54th globally for graduate employability.

Heidelberg University – THE: 49th | QS: 80th
Famed for its picturesque old town and romantic setting, students at Heidelberg University are able to enjoy walks along the Neckar River and the city’s café culture.
Germany’s oldest university has a close-knit community and a wealth of traditions, giving student life in the city a unique charm.Â
A fifth of students at Heidelberg come from abroad to study, and the university is ranked 71st globally for graduate employability.

Humboldt University of Berlin – THE: 89th (84th in 2025) | QS: 130
Humboldt is one of Europe’s most prestigious universities, especially in arts and humanities.Â
The university is known for its progressive and politically engaged student body, with many opportunities for activism, interdisciplinary collaboration and cultural events
Located in the heart of Berlin, it also offers students easy access to world-class museums, galleries and legendary nightlife.
With a relatively large international body of students (15 percent) and a graduate employability rank of 68th, Humboldt is ideal for those seeking a cosmopolitan experience in Germany’s capital.
Charité – Medical University Berlin – THE: 91st | QS: Not in top 100 overall, ranked 93rd for Medicine
Berlin Charité is Europe’s largest university hospital, providing medical students with hands-on experience and access to cutting-edge research. Unsurprisingly, it scores impressively for its international outlook and received a perfect score for the quality and depth of it ties to industry.
The school's location in Berlin means students here can take advantage of both rigorous medical training and the city’s rich cultural offerings, from music and art to nightlife and activism.
RWTH Aachen University – THE: 92nd | QS: 105th
RWTH Aachen is celebrated for its strong engineering culture and close ties to industry, with many students involved in practical projects and internships.
The city of Aachen offers a friendly, international atmosphere and a lively student scene – with plenty of social events and clubs – while the university’s focus on innovation and entrepreneurship gives students plenty of opportunities to put their skills into practice.
RWTH Aachen's location near the Netherlands and Belgium adds to its multicultural appeal.

University of Bonn – THE: 92nd | QS: 207
The University of Bonn is known for its green spaces, historic architecture and relaxed atmosphere, making it a pleasant and picturesque place to study.

University of Tübingen – THE: 98th | QS: 215th

Free University Berlin – THE: 113rd | QS: 88th
Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin) continues to be one of Germany’s most internationally recognised institutions, particularly noted for its strengths in the humanities and social sciences.
FU Berlin stands out above all for its cosmopolitan campus and commitment to academic freedom.

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – THE: 166 | QS: 98th
