Direct train services between Berlin and Hamburg were cancelled in both directions on Monday morning because of a faulty overhead line near the town of Uelzen.
Passengers on the busy Berlin – Hamburg route are already experiencing longer journey times as a result of planned track renovations, due to last until the end of April 2026.
The current disruptions are caused by a fault with the overhead lines on the alternative, partially single-track route which passes through Uelzen, Salzwedel, and Stendal.
High-speed ICE trains are not currently operating on this route. Deutsche Bahn (DB) is advising passengers to travel via Hanover and change trains there.

Passengers should also be aware that trains between Hamburg and Hanover are being rerouted and may experience delays of up to 50 minutes, according to the latest information from DB.
Additionally, ICE trains running between Hamburg and Hanover are not stopping at Celle, Uelzen, and LĂĽneburg.

As of Monday morning, Deutsche Bahn expected to have the fault repaired by Monday afternoon. Until then, travellers should plan for extended travel times and possible disruptions.
Passengers may use alternative travel times or routes
All passengers who have a ticket for travel on September 22nd between Berlin and Hamburg can use their ticket on a later date without additional costs.
Passengers can also use their tickets to reach their destination via alternate trains or routes. Seat reservations can be cancelled free of charge.
Passengers affected by delays of 60 minutes or more may be eligible for compensation under EU passenger rights regulations – usually amounting to 25 percent or 50 percent of the ticket price depending on the length of the delay.
Claims can be submitted online or at DB travel centres.
