Germany, overwhelmed by people fleeing war and
poverty, is trying to stem the tide of asylum seekers from the Balkans, a region now considered safe at least from armed conflict.
Germany last year deported the highest number of people in years, government figures revealed on Tuesday. Many of those refused asylum and sent home had come from Balkan countries.
Germany is planning to restrict immigration from the Balkan states under a draft government bill. Asylum applicants could find their request turned down within a week under the new law.
