For those of us who live in Germany, it can be easy to focus on daily frustrations – delayed trains, housing shortages or bureaucracy.
But new international rankings suggest Germany continues to outperform most countries globally, particularly when it comes to long-term stability and overall quality of life.
A global study by US News & World Report has placed Germany fourth in its '2026 Best Countries' ranking.
At the same time, a separate 'Immigration Index' by financial services company Remitly ranks Germany as the fifth-best country in the world to move to.
Taken together, the findings offer a reminder that despite its well-known challenges, Germany remains one of the most attractive places to live anywhere in the world.
A data‑driven view of the 'best countries'
Unlike earlier versions, the 2026 Best Countries ranking was compiled using a data-driven approach rather than perception surveys.
Researchers evaluated 100 countries across eight major categories, including governance, economic development, health, infrastructure and civic health, alongside 24 detailed subcategories such as healthcare, labour markets and public safety.

Produced in partnership with the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the report is said to reflect a broader shift towards measuring real-world outcomes rather than reputation.
One key takeaway from the study is that success is about balance. Countries that perform well across multiple areas – rather than excelling in just one – tended to rank higher.
Ranked fourth overall, Germany stands out in the report for its consistently high performance across multiple categories, including third place in economic development and fourth in culture and tourism.
According to the authors, Germany combines a powerful economy with “unmatched social infrastructure,” including second place rankings in both the healthcare and labour markets subcategories.
It also performs strongly when it comes to raising children, where it ranks seventh globally.
How Germany compares with the rest of the world
Despite the change in methodology, Switzerland holds on to the top spot in 2026 thanks to its balanced performance across nearly all categories.
Denmark and Sweden follow in second and third place respectively, both known for strong welfare systems and high levels of governance and opportunity.

Germany and the Netherlands complete the top five, highlighting the stable institutions, social safety nets and high-quality infrastructure enjoyed by residents in many European countries.
Notably, some global heavyweights do not perform as well. The United States was ranked 18th overall, largely because of uneven performance across categories such as health and infrastructure despite its strong economic performance.
Fifth best place to move
That same balance is also reflected in another major global study – the Immigration Index 2026 by digital financial services provider Remitly.
Germany comes fifth overall in this ranking, which evaluates 82 countries using 34 metrics ranging from healthcare and employment to safety and family support.
The methodology here focused specifically on the needs of people relocating, examining factors such as cost of living, earning potential, public transport and immigrant communities.

Germany scored highly thanks to its “robust infrastructure and social systems,” strong healthcare provision, environmental performance and long-term career prospects within Europe’s largest economy.
It also performed well in areas like energy security and earning potential – factors that contribute to long-term stability.
Once again, Switzerland sits at the top of the Immigration Index, followed this time by Iceland, Luxembourg and Australia.
