The tense hostage situation at a Volksbank branch in Sinzig, western Germany, came to an end on Friday afternoon when special police units stormed the building and freed two people who had been held inside.
Both were found unharmed, according to police, but the suspected perpetrators had already fled by the time officers entered the bank, prompting an ongoing search.
Officers from the Special Operations Command (SEK) entered the bank and discovered the two victims locked in a room.Â
Based on current police assessments, it now appears likely that the perpetrators locked the two individuals inside the room shortly after the robbery and left the building almost immediately afterwards.
Throughout the several‑hour police operation, there was no direct contact between officers and the suspected perpetrators. When special forces finally stormed the bank in the early afternoon, only the locked‑in hostages were still inside.
One of the hostages was reportedly the driver of a cash transport vehicle that had arrived at the branch moments before the perpetrators struck.
Large‑scale operation
Earlier reports from BILD described a large‑scale operation in the town centre, with helicopters circling overhead and heavily armed officers securing the area.
Police cordoned off a radius of around 300 metres and advised residents within the zone to remain inside their homes, while stressing there was no danger to the wider public. Schools in the affected area were temporarily cleared as a precaution.
Emergency services were out in force throughout the day, with several hundred responders deployed. The city set up a temporary relief centre and an emergency treatment station as a precaution.
Investigators have so far declined to comment on whether the perpetrators made off with any money.
Given that the robbery coincided with the arrival of an armoured cash vehicle, police believe the attack was likely focused on its contents or cash intended for ATMs.
As of mid‑afternoon, police said they believed the suspects were no longer in the immediate area. Forensic teams remain on site, and the freed individuals are expected to be questioned once they have received care.
Sinzig lies about 25 kilometres south of Bonn and 35 kilometres north‑west of Koblenz.
Police have stressed that the operation will only truly be over once those responsible are identified and caught.
