The German language is famous for its precision, which can be a great comfort when it comes to describing medical symptoms.
While English can leave you floundering about with vague phrases like “I feel rough,” German offers an arsenal of specific terms – including Gliederschmerzen.
What does Gliederschmerzen mean?
Let’s break it down. Gliederschmerzen - pronounced like this -  is formed from Glieder (limbs) and Schmerzen (pains) and so roughly translates as “limb pain”.
Der Gliederschmerz is a masculine noun but “pain” in Germany is nearly always described in the plural.
So, while English speakers might say “I have limb pain,” Germans tend to speak of pains: die Gliederschmerzen.

You’ll see this pattern with other aches and pains as well. Germans will always say Ich habe Kopfschmerzen (I have a headache), for example, or Ich habe RĂĽckenschmerzen (I have back pain) – and never Ich habe ein Kopfschmerz. Â
Why do I need to know Gliederschmerzen?
It’s flu season. There are moments when it feels as if every other person in the country is battling against a runny nose, pounding head and sore throat.
But one symptom that can be particularly hard to convey in English is that deep, uncomfortable ache in your arms and legs that a flu can bring.
“My legs are achy” just doesn’t cut it and “limb pain” hardly trips off the tongue in English – but Gliederschmerzen is used like a medical term that comes with a very welcome degree of authority.
Or, to put it another way, it’s perfect for making sure everyone around you knows precisely how miserable you’re feeling.
Use it like this:
Ich habe Gliederschmerzen, das muss der Grippeanfang sein.
I have aches in my limbs; this must be the start of the flu.
