The cancellation of at least 98 flights at Frankfurt Airport was officially confirmed on Monday morning by a spokeswoman for the airport operator Fraport.
The spokeswoman also told the German Press Agency that the number of flights affected could increase as the day goes on.
The primary cause of the cancellations and delays is severe winter weather, including heavy snowfall and warnings of black ice.
The German Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning for black ice in parts of Hesse and several other federal states.
Frankfurt Airport is advising passengers due to fly today to arrive at the terminal at least three hours before departure. Travellers should check their flight status before heading to the airport.
For the latest info, travellers are advised to visit www.frankfurt-airport.com, or call 01806-FRAINFO (01806-3724636). Note that calls to Fraport's information telephone service cost €0.20 per call from a landline within Germany, €0.60 per call from a mobile network within Germany.
At the time of writing, no other German airports are reporting significant delays or cancellations for Monday. But anyone planning to fly from a German airport today would be well-advised to check their flight status in advance, allow extra time for their journey to the airport, and be prepared for possible changes due to the weather conditions.
Train service disruptions around Frankfurt Airport
Travellers flying out of Frankfurt should also be aware of ongoing train cancellations on the route between Mainz/Wiesbaden and Frankfurt due to construction. This affects several lines serving the airport, including the S8 and S9 lines, and the RE2 train.
Due to icy conditions, the Sky Line service between terminals at the airport is currently limited between Terminal 1/B and Terminal 2. A replacement bus service is operating there instead.
