Real estate prices are on the rise again, but some financial experts suggest that now is a good time to buy a home in Germany. So how much do you need to earn to purchase a house or apartment here?

No, only deductible if you rent it out. What you can deduct are the costs for craftsman services and household services, for example cleaning help.

Is there any tax benefit to having a home mortgage in Germany like there is in the U.S. where mortgage interest is a deductible expense for Federal Income taxes?
  • Hi Mark, Thanks for your comment - it inspired us to look into this and we've just published a short article on the topic. But to put it simply no, Germany doesn't have tax benefits for interest paid on your mortgage. However, as Ida has also mentioned here, there are some possible deductions if you are renting the property.
