The Local Germany is visited by over 150,000 readers each month and has over 6,000 paying members, who help support the site.
Our goal is to explain to them the main news and law changes in Germany and how they impact foreign residents in the country as well as offering original practical and cultural guides to help with aspects of life in Germany.
As a result we have our own unique news agenda that is different to any other news site with the overall aim being to help foreign residents and visitors navigate life in Germany.
Because The Local Germany is staffed by people who have set up lives in the country, we have a keen understanding of the challenges our readers face and we work closely with our members to explain the news and changes that will impact them.
The Local Germany is seeking an editorÂ
The Local is currently seeking an editor in Germany to join our international team working across nine countries in Europe.
As the editor, you will be based in Germany work very closely with the other journalist in the German team as well as with the managing editor and other journalists around Europe, with the main aim of building membership of The Local Germany.
To do that you will focus on covering the news from Germany that impacts international residents and write articles to explain the practical and cultural challenges our readers face in the country.
In this versatile role you'll also write interesting features to help our readers understand the German language, as well as the country's traditions and culture.
Your job will be to seek out the issues that matter most to our readers as foreign residents in Germany from dual citizenship and immigration concerns or travel problems and renting costs.
You will also be part of a vibrant team stretching from Sweden to Spain, working together to grow membership across The Local and increase its profile among an international audience.
The Local currently has around 50,000 members of which around 6,500 are signed up to our German site.
What we expect from you:Â Â
- An exceptional level of written and spoken English (native level)
- Fluency in German, at least 2 years experience of living in Germany and knowledge of how the country works.
- You'll currently be living in Germany and are comfortable with working from home. There is the possibility of a co-working space for part of the week if you are based in Berlin.
- At least two years experience in an editorial role, with experience of covering news - local or national
- The ability to write clear, concise and engaging news stories, explainers and practical features
- The ability to dig out stories that matter to readers and build contacts with groups and associations representing foreign nationals
- Flexibility: the ability to work some unsocial hours as needed, sometimes at short notice
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- You have the curiosity needed to really understand Germany and help explain the country to our readers
- Be competitive to make sure The Local Germany performs better than rival news sites
- Be focussed on the overall aim of boosting membership numbers of The Local Germany
