Following attacks on Israel's embassies in Copenhagen and Stockholm, Denmark plans to increase controls at its borders with Germany and Sweden, according to police.

"The decision to increase police efforts to combat crime, visibility and prevention in the border areas is based on recent incidents in Copenhagen and Stockholm," police said on Saturday. "Random checks of vehicles and travelers at the borders with Sweden and Germany" would be carried out.

In Copenhagen, there were two explosions in the "immediate vicinity" of the Israeli embassy on Wednesday, police said. In Stockholm, police said shots were fired at the Israeli embassy on Tuesday. There were no injuries in either city.

Two Swedish citizens aged 16 and 19 are suspected in Denmark of having triggered the explosions in Copenhagen with hand grenades. They must initially remain in custody until the end of the month.

"Unfortunately, recent developments have confirmed that the terrorist threat to Denmark is serious," said the Chief Inspector of the Danish Police, Peter Ekebjærg. "We are closely monitoring the current situation, assessing the impact on the general threat picture and continuously implementing the necessary security measures."

The Swedish secret service stated on Thursday that there were indications that pointed to possible Iranian involvement. "But that is more of a guess than real knowledge," said the head of operations at the Swedish secret service Säpo, Fredrik Hallstrom.
