A regional train struck a parked freight train in western Germany on Tuesday, resulting in 14 people becoming injured, three of them seriously.

The crash happened in the district of Wesel, north west of Duisburg, early on Tuesday morning.

At around 7.30am, a passing regional train struck a parked freight train at the Reitweg level crossing in Rheinberg.

According to police, 14 people were injured by the force of the impact, three of them seriously.

Emergency services, including a helicopter, rushed to the scene when it happened and transported those injured to hospitals in the area.

It is still unclear how the incident happened. A traffic accident investigation team is on site.

The line between Moers and Xanten is closed, which is causing major delays and train cancellations on the RB31 line.

A rail replacement service with buses has been set up.

The line at Rheinkamp station is currently closed in both directions and, according to a fire department spokesperson, is likely to remain so for several hours.
