Your comment raises an important issue. The real estate transaction fees in Germany are notably high compared to other countries, especially Norway (where I’m from), where such fees are a fraction of the cost. In a country like Norway, with strong purchasing power, fees of 0.5%-1% are common, while in Germany, the much higher costs seem driven by policy decisions influenced by strong lobbying. The result is a system designed to discourage speculation and homeownership, keeping many people renting instead. The Local often glossing over these deeper issues, which may reflect a broader problem than what is commonly discussed in your articles. It’s an important topic and should spark deeper discussion on how these policies impact the housing market and homeownership in Germany.
