Why do I need to know âObâ?
If youâre wondering whether âobâ is important or not, read further.
What does it mean?
The most direct meaning of âobâ is simply âwhetherâ or âifâ. As with other subordinating conjunctions like âdassâ (thatâ), âwennâ (if) or âweilâ (because), the âobâ shifts the verb order in a sentence clause.Â
For example, if amid your language learning frustration you muse, âI donât know whether itâs a waste of time to learn German grammarâ, the sentence would be structured as âIch weiĂ nicht, ob es eine Zeitverschwendung ist, die deutsche Grammatik zu lernen,â with the verb order âflippedâ in the second and third clauses so that the verbs appear on the end.Â
(We hope we havenât answered that question for you!)

The word ob also fits nicely into a variety of everyday expressions. Most commonly, youâll hear âals obâ meaning âas thoughâ or âas ifâ. If youâre trying to make a strong statement, then âegal obâ (regardless of whether) will also come in handy, as will âgleichgĂźltig, obâ (no matter whetherâŚ).
If you're fully on board with what your friend is telling you, you could exclaim âUnd ob!â, meaning âYou said it!â Brits might also translate it as âNot half!â similar to the American âYou bet!â
Lastly, if you take a medical exam at the doctorâs, and receive a notice back with âoBâ written on it, go ahead and let out a big sigh of relief. This stands for âohne Befund,â or results negative.
Walking past the Rathaus (townhall) on your way home you might also spot an OB on the door, short for OberbĂźrgermeister, meaning Lord Mayor or, since weâre no longer in the 17th century, just mayor.Â
