Unfortunately this article doesn't give the whole truth I became self-employed approximately 14 years ago and it's possible to continue paying into the Deutsche rentenversicherung as long as you accept that you will be paying not only your own part of the contribution but also the employers bad as well.
This year they have now introduced a new minimum payment which means if you are a low earner they take that into account - although previously this was not the case.
