Deutsche Bahn’s staff filed 1,199 reports of violent behavior last year. This was an increase of around 200 on the previous year.
The train operator's safety report, which was seen by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, included incidents as severe as a passenger setting a dog on a Deutsche Bahn employee at Cologne’s main train station.
“Our colleagues are not fair game,” Gerd Becht, security committee member said following the report. “We will not tolerate violence.”
He added Deutsche Bahn would be “closing ranks with unions to get a grip on the problem”.
In 2011, Deutsche Bahn upped its security personnel from 3,200 employees to 3,700 to better staff busy train stations during football matches and smaller rural stations near popular nightclubs.
