Working Germans must generally have been employed and paying taxes for at least 12 months before they qualify for unemployment benefits. But the cabinet’s decision allows artists, who have “diverse forms of work,” to apply for unemployment after only six months of employment.
The new rule was formed with actors specifically in mind, and only those who make less than €30,240 per year qualify.
Culture Minister Bernd Neumann said it will significantly improve the financial security of those working in the arts.
After three years, the cabinet will review possible changes, he added.
