Perhaps the financial crisis is leading to a few more half litres of Hefeweizen each night for Germans. Beer sales rose two percent in the third quarter of 2008, the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) announced on Wednesday in Wiesbaden.

Breweries and storage facilities sold some 28 million hectolitres of beer, up by 600,000 hectolitres from last year’s third quarter.

Meanwhile beer mixed with cola, lemonade and fruit juice made up 1.3 million hectolitres of combined sales, going up by 4.9 percent.

Some 84.2 percent of all beer sold in Germany remained in country, also up by nearly 2 percent.
